In a current project, I partner with Advocates for Immigrant Survivors to better understand how immigrant survivors of abuse interact with police while reporting crime. Our goal is to interview 30 survivors of abuse on their experiences. We hypothesize that negative interactions with police will leave individuals with lower feelings of political efficacy and lower trust in governmental institutions, while positive interactions will result in the converse. We are currently in the data collection phase and hope to complete data collection by the end of 2023 and complete our analysis by the end of 2024.
In another civically engaged project, my co-author and I partner with the BakerRipley civic engagement team and the League of Women Voters of Houston to test GOTV messaging on low-propensity voters. As part of the study, we will send out approximately 45,000 mailers for the City of Houston mayoral election, which will be held in November 2023. We explore place-based identity, attachment to one's community, and the effects of receiving multiple mailers. We will be sending out the mailers during early voting and anticipate obtaining data on voter turnout at the beginning of 2024. We expect to complete our analysis by summer of 2024.
